In the nineteenth century in Europe, with the growth of industry and new technologies, the field of graphic design emerged. Historically, however, in a sense Assyrian, Persian, and Roman reliefs were a kind of graphic design, because they depicted events in the form of images, which were in fact propaganda for the ruling government. In addition, it was common in ancient Egypt and Rome to make public advertisements with posters. One of the oldest advertisements discovered is a papyrus offering a reward for bringing a fugitive slave back to Egypt. There are also medieval advertisements that were written on the skins of animals and some of them even had a picture.

However, print ads appeared in the late 15th century. From the 16th century onwards, examples of print ads, which often consisted of printed letters, became popular, but the printing technique had to go through more advanced stages to allow the emergence of color illustrated posters. The invention of the lithographic method played an important role in the spread of fast and cheap color printing. Of course, the technique of color printing and its expansion alone was not effective in the emergence of art and graphic design, but living in large and industrial cities that brought a new kind of public communication that was born of the complexity of modern urban life, was the main factor in the emergence of this art.
